How To Cut Down Ralph's Work

Men' Club Members!

I have often thought of ways to actually improve the course aesthetics whilst REDUCING Ralph Corona's workload.

I appreciate the condition of the greens @ Mountain View G.C. They are the proper firmness and roll pretty true. Save for the ball marks others leave behind, these are very nice greens!

This layout, though short, is TIGHT. Some fairways are barely 25' wide at important locations. Several tee boxes are occluded with overhanging tree canopies. Suffice it to say, if you don't pay attention to your position on the tee box, you quite possibly will have the tee shot deflected by a branch!

My suggestion is to get better-defined fairways through REDUCED MOWING effort. The grasses in the rough are such that even if you mowed them only once a month, you could still find and play your ball. But the return of mowing a defined fairway would be significant. The eye-appeal of seeing where the hole actually goes would enhance the golfing experience.

Fo example, the parallel 1st and 10th Holes. The 10th is especially "non-descript" in it's appearance --- it is a dogleg right, with an oblong trap protecting the major part of the front of the green --- but you can't really tell that from the teeing area, now can you?

Another one is Hole #8, which is straight until approximately 75yds. out, then is a dogleg right, again with a bunker protecting half of the front of the run-up on the right.

What I am trying to have you picture in your mind is a course with defined fairwways and, yes, something resembling "rough."

What say you?

Actually it is much more work to define fairways, than to jus tset the mower for one height. Ask yourself these two questions: Do you want to have a longer round, because most people have a hard time with rough. As tight as M.V. is are you good enough to play the rough and not slow down everyone behind you.

I thought we were just trying to get a handle on the cart path issue. Now we need to deal with course aesthetics??

Let me suggest something ---

Have Ralph & Co. mow as they do, at a fairway height setting, EVERYWHERE accept BETWEEN the trees. Most adjacent holes are separated by a tree line. Not mowing between the trees leaves about a yard of rough. That shouldn't slow-down play.
